The Birmingham Pen Museum – One Of A Kind

Did you know there was a Pen Museum in Birmingham? me neither, until recently that is.

The Pen Museum is in the Argent Centre, built in 1863 this former pen factory is a Grade II listed building & is dedicated to the history of the pen industry. This small independent museum is the only one of its kind in Britain & houses a collection of over 5,000 pen related items. There are machines, typewriters & a number of other objects akin to the writing & the steel pen trade for visitor’s to try their hand at.

The Scribble Pen made an appearance on Kickstarter possibly one of the more well known crowd funding platforms mid August, attracting a hefty number of backers they very swiftly reached their goal.

The Spincil – All in one pencil & spinning top

If you’ve ever had writers block then a little distraction may be just the thing to get the creative juices flowing. The Spincil is a 2b graphite lead pencil made from natural beechwood with a spinning top at the end, which is a novel change from an eraser I suppose! It’s been created by Ortiedesign a French design studio who say they like to embellish everyday life by using everyday materials & healthy paints. I was pleased to read that they care about the environment too so use wood from sustainable forests & don’t create unnecessary packaging.

This creative project has been brought to fruition through Kickstarter, which is apparently the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects. Backers make their pledges & if the funding goal is reached what began as a dream of an idea can become a reality.
